We are a Canada goose hunting Outfitter and that is what we focus on. We have never charged for duck hunting as it is very spotty to outfit for and is so weather sensitive. We have offered some duck hunting by taking a group out the end of a day but it is so hit and miss, especially during the month of October. It is also an issue because we will typically have one spot we feel good about but may have two or three groups wanting to hunt ducks. Starting in 2016 we are going to change how we deal with duck hunting. We are no longer going to offer duck hunting simply as an “added value” item to our goose hunts. Duck hunting will be conducted on a “fee for service” basis going forward. One reason for this is because our guides sign on to guide Canada goose hunting and they go hard at that for 7 straight weeks and in addition have been expected to “volunteer” to go back out the end of the day to take a group duck hunting. The guides will now be compensated for guiding duck hunting and we are also in the process of making arrangements with several avid duck hunters to rent access to their sites on a daily basis as needed. This will supplement the duck hunting available off our own leases. We will only offer a duck hunt if we feel we have a reasonable chance at shooting birds, either because we have decent hunting weather or have observed birds “hitting” a certain area.
If a group of up to four hunters want to purchase a duck hunt the price will be $300 in total, plus H.S.T. The hunt will typically be after the goose hunt is finished and run approximately the final three or four hours of legal shooting time. This is just a guideline, as circumstances such as weather could change things. If it is a dirty windy wet day (in other words a real duck day) and the goose hunt is done relatively early, the decision is often made to go and set up for ducks immediately. Now and than there may be a group that wants to dedicate a day to duck hunting and we will accommodate that if possible (for example, we would not conduct a duck hunt if it is a sunny “blue bird” day).
This is all part of our attempt to offer an improved duck hunting product and we feel the only way to do that is to invest more into it and to charge for it. We would appreciate feedback from our hunter’s and anyone else who might wish to offer an opinion.
